Welcome to gardening! Whether you have a single pot growing your first plant, or you have a massive kitchen garden bursting with vegetables and herbs, they both follow the same formula; take good soil, add seed or plant, give it sunshine and water. Voila! You are a gardener.
If you are like me you are drawn to the beginning of plants. You feel a thrill of excitement when those tiny rock like seeds, turn into delicate beautifully green shoots, which then turn into strong resilient plants. If you are more like my mom you enjoy the bountiful return on your investment of time and energy. Gardens that are overflowing with vegetables, flowers that are vibrant and tall, and trees that are bowed down with the amount of fruit on them. Whatever hooked you, I’m glad you’re here!
So, let’s get down to the basics. Like I said earlier, the formula for gardening is very simple:
soil + plant + water + sunshine = happy healthy plant
There are lots to resources available to help you improve that formula and I don’t want to add to the noise of that. BUT I do want to encourage you to be bold and experiment with your gardening. Don’t have a yard? Try using pots and containers to make your garden. Have too much yard? Pick a small spot and start there, then work your way out. Want to grow pumpkins in January or want to grow 12 different types of tomatoes? Go for it. I have learned more about gardens and plants by trying every idea I have. Some ideas work and other don’t. Some solid TRUTHS I have read on the internet have turned out to be flops. I have found what works for me, in my area, with my chosen plants through experimentation and a fearless attitude. I encourage you all to do the same, and don’t forget it’s okay to get a little dirt under those beautifully manicured nails!
